The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus - Terry Gilliam’s new Johnny Depp movie that Heath Ledger was filming when he died - has its first preview online. What do you think?

May 18, 2009 - Writers, Billionaires Argue About Who Should Play Sinatra

Last week it came out that Johnny Depp was on the very short list to play Frank Sinatra in a new Martin Scorse biopic (which stands to be excellent, and irresistable awards bait.) But Leonardo DiCaprio - who Scorsese has made four movies with before - is also on the short short list along with James Franco. Mad Men star Jon Hamm is a darkhorse, apparently (and I have to admit I’d love that. I absolutely love Hamm and I’d love to see him get a break like that. He embodies Sinatra’s style and attitude, too.) Anyway, the Kansas City Star has a good basic news account. Den of Geek is very much against DiCaprio. And Deadline Hollywood reports Depp is Universal Studios’ first choice for the role and has a nifty side by side Sinatra-Depp photo comparison. Stay tuned.

May 15, 2009 - Martin Scorsese Wants Johnny Depp to Play Frank Sinatra

Entertainment Weekly reports that Martin Scorsese is narrowing down the candidates to star in his new Frank Sinatra biopic and Johnny Depp is at the top of his list. Depp’s people deny it. My feeling is that nobody turns down Scorsese. You just can’t get a more prestigious offer. Depp still hasn’t won an Oscar and, let’s be honest, who wouldn’t get a little competitive about that? A Scorsese directed Frank Sinatra biopic starring Johnny Depp released late in the year sounds like a shoe in - a great opportunity for them to give it to him. And most importantly, I love Sinatra, a combination of classic Vegas and Sinatra music with a Walk the Line kind of story sounds to die for, and I could see Depp sounds perfect for it.

New Posters

Public Enemies got a set of three new posters earlier in the week. On the whole I think I’m a fan. I especially like the one with Depp looking out from behind a tree with a tommy gun in a misty forest. It’s very atmospheric and soothing on the eyes.

May 12, 2009 - Christian Bale Didn’t Speak to Johnny Depp on Set

Strange article in Starpulse - a publicity piece for Public Enemies, in theory. The story is about how Christian Bale doesn’t like to be friends with his costars or even speak to them. He describes a scene where they were working almost side by side but he says he never spoke to him and he certainly won’t get to know him through this movie. He never phrases it like it’s a big acting tip or school of theater. He just sounds like a total douche bag. What do you think?

May 7, 2009 - The Name of Johnny Depp’s Boat

For those who don’t know Johnny Depp has a boat - appropriate for the former Cap’n Jack Sparrow. He’s sailing on it with his family right now in between shooting scenes of The Rum Diaries. The boat’s name is VaJoLiRoJa - the first two letters of the names of each member of his family strung together with a Spanish flair. I can’t quite wrap my tongue around it.

Poll Shows 98% of Movie Goers Plan to See Public Enemies

No, of course that isn’t true. It’s lying with statistics in an extreme form. But the UK pop culture site Pop Sugar did hold a poll asking Public Enemies - see it or skip it? So far 98% say they plan to see it. That doesn’t mean it will break any records but I do think it’s a good sign that enthusiasm is very high in certain circles.

May 4, 2009 - J. Edgar Hoover, Dark Shadows Fans

There was nothing groundbreaking in the Johnny Depp world over the weekend, but two curious stories jumped out at me. An about his role as J. Edgar Hoover in Public Enemies. Sounds like he has no scenes with Depp, unfortunately. And a writer for the tiny Evansville Courier Press got on a good ramble about his memories of Dark Shadows (which Depp is expected to star in an adaptation of soon) and the specific forms the fan culture takes today (I had no idea there was a specific restaurant where fans congregated.)

May 1, 2009 - Johnny Depp to Star as The Lone Ranger? Not quite!

Among his other projects a new Lone Ranger movie is now in the mix for Johnny Depp. He’d be teaming back up with Donnie Brasco director Mike Newell. Depp will be great as The Lone Ranger, right? He’s done action, he’s mysterious, he can bring so depth to it. But wait - that was an inference. Apparently Depp would not be playing The Lone Ranger in the movie. He’d be playing Tonto.

Tonto?

Never having been much of a Lone Ranger fan I’m sort of non-plussed. What’s far more exciting to me, to be honest, is the second story in that same article. Robert Zemeckis is making a sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? COOLNESS!
